In Israel, army service is mandatory for Jewish citizens. Once they turn eighteen, boys and girls must serve for a period of at least two years. On Recruitment Day, teenagers arrive at the central army base, escorted by family and friends, where they begin a journey towards adulthood. At the same time, their parents officially lose their grip on their own children, now in the hands of the army.
March ‘19 was shot during Recruitment Day on March 2019, and examines an emotional crossroads, deeply rooted in the Jewish-Israeli identity. It muses on growing up in a country that lives by the sword, while raising universal questions about the boundaries and responsibilities of parenthood.
